We've past halfway point of 2010

Believe it or not it's already July! And we only have less than 6 months to go before we say goodbye to 2010. So let's have a look at the first 6 months of this year ....

January Medal Winner - Frasier Hedges (net 71)
February Medal Winner - Charlie Brown (net 76)
March Medal Winner - Frasier Hedges (net 76)
April Medal Winner - Bryan Buckle (net 70)
May Medal Winner - Serge Quere (net 77)
June Medal Winner - Mehdi Bouguetaia (net 71)

There you go. I didn't see my name anywhere so I think I don't have to say more about my performance. July medal will be on the 31st and I have a good feeling I will be in contention for my first medal of this year.

Today I played with Elian. Just the two of us. Pak Eric was occupied with his family visiting from Holland, Charlie and the rest are away on summer break, Bryan is on leave and Frasier has left us after his company closed their office in Gabon. I hope next week we have more people otherwise it's me and Elian again.

With British Open now on, we're keeping the golfing flag flying in Gamba .....

Will we survive?

Last weekend we played our normal game like every other week. There were 7 of us in total. Pak Eric, Serge, Annick, Frasier, Anthony, myself and Charlie. The last 7 hardcore golfers in the whole of Gamba. I played with Pak Eric and as always we laughed from the first hole to the last.

It's amazing that with an excellent 18 hole course, we only have 7 golfers. Soon Frasier will leave and probably Pak Eric will also start his long awaited retirement. That will leave us with 5 !!! Maybe when Nisa returns we can have 6. If Jacie or Terry decided to play then we'll have 7. If we can convince Sanjeev to re-start his professional career we may just get 8.

8 hardcore golfers ..... sad !! Next year our turn to leave will come. Very likely Charlie and Sanjeev will also end their stay in Gabon. I sincerely hope new keen golfers will appear in Gamba. We need them desperately. Otherwise the survival of Gamba Golf Club will not be good.

For others it's the elephants and the wildlife and the jungles. For us it's the golf course. Gamba is not the same without it. We love playing golf and we are very lucky to be here enjoying an excellent course so close to our house. To all never say die golfers in Gamba ...... we love you.

Gamba Golf Club Championship

It's finally over. Our annual club championship was successfully held on the 13th and 14th of February 2010. It also coincides with the February medal. I'm afraid I can only relate my own experience and therefore the excitement evolve around my super shot making and not the others.

First day - February Medal - 13.02.2010
As usual, the game is arranged in pairs with the lowest handicap starting from hole 1 and the next continues at hole 3, 5, 7 and so on. Having the second lowest handicap, I started from hole 1 with Frasier. The first 9 holes were not bad, both of us scored less than 5 over par .... I know, it's actually not good but it could've been worse.

The second 9 was more or less the same for me. Unfortunately Frasier's game collapsed after hole 12. I think it was the heat. Brian Buckle even gave up half way after suffering from severe headache. Anyway, after the day was over I scored 6 over par. The winner for February medal and leader of the championship was Charlie Brown and his score was 5 over par. Only 1 shot better than me !!! Tough luck but I still have a chance to catch up on the second day tomorrow.

Second day - 14.02.2010

We came back the next day ready to continue the battle. Again I started from hole 1, this time with Charlie as the pair with the best 1st day score. My game plan was simple. Beat Charlie and you'll win the championship. It was easy, by end of the first hole I overtook him by 5 shots. After the 1st nine I was even par and Charlie was ready to go home.
The second nine was not so good for me. I scored 3 over par. Charlie somehow improved his game and managed to get some good score here and there. The whole day was great. We were relating our game with Zohan .... the great spy from a movie character played by Adam Sandler. I think that's what made Charlie's game improved.
Anyway by end of the day I scored a 74. My total 2 day score was 151 and I was a club house leader for most of the day until ...... Vincent completed his round. I lost the net score to him by .... 1 shot !!! Then there was the total gross and again I lost. This time to Frasier and again by 1 shot !!! Unbelievable.

The final result is as follows:
Winner February Medal - Charlie (lost to him by 1 shot)
Note: Charlie also won the Longest Drive and Nearest to Pin for second day.

Winner Club Championship Net - Vincent (lost to him by 1 shot)

Winner Club Championship Gross - Frasier (lost to him by 1 shot)

Winner Nearest to Pin 1st day - Azam

Winner Longest Drive 1st day - Jaycie

Golf news update for January 09

Hello everyone, I think it's high time we have some updates on the latest in Gamba Golf activities. It's almost the end of January so let me give you some key highlights ...

First of course is the January monthly medal. No surprise here, I didn't win. Frasier got it so congratulation to him. Can't remember what was his score but playing in the same flight with him, I can assure everybody he deserve to win. He was hot and I just couldn't keep up.

Then we have the weekly games. Yesterday Pak Eric won the longest drive and the total score. So two tubes of golf balls to him. I lost everything. Again not a surprise. The first weekly game of 2010 was won by .... can't remember but it wasn't me. Need to start re-grouping to capture back some lost pride so beware Gamba, I'm going to be back soon !!!

Just to give some idea how great our golf course is, I managed to find a photo of the course given to me by a colleague 2 years ago.

You can see how close my house is to the course. In some places, you need to have tons of money to have this kind of living. I'm very lucky and so are everybody in Yenzi camp. It takes us only 5 minutes to be at the 1st hole.

We hope to get more golfers to pick up the game and join the weekly activities. I was told more golf sets are being purchased by the club for people to use. Excellent, I really hope more Gabonese will join the fun. This will ensure the course will be around for a long time to come.

If you are interested, don't hesitate to contact our club president ...... Mr Charlie Brown.

2009 Annual Championship

The tournament everybody was waiting for finally arrived on the 14th of December 2009. Gamba Golf Club annual championship was held for 2 days. The first day was also the medal for December and therefore the final chance for everybody to score on the ecclectic. Although nobody is really interested to know, I'm proud to announce that I was the leader going into this final day.

The first day did not actually started as planned. A few jokers came late and there were also last minute withdrawals. But the game still started and those that managed to make it, tee off from the 1st hole. I was supposed to be in the final flight but due to the few late arrivals was forced to join an earlier group.

The flight in front of us was super slow. We literally had to wait for every shot from the 1st hole to the last. My game collapse after my first tee shot. I did manage to get a birdie but other than that it was a long day indeed. I think it's an expensive lesson for me. I need to control my mind better in the future.

It's obvious that I failed to win the December medal and to make it worse, I also lost the ecclectic. Now I need to start all over again in 2010. Anyway, the second day was still on so we re-assembled on the 15th. This time we started in the morning.

The day was great and we changed the starting system. I started from hole 5 with Vincent and we were blazing hot for the first 2 holes. As soon as we were walking to our 3rd hole, the sky opened and heavy rains arrived. We were perfectly located because our 3rd hole is next to the golf paillot. We conveniently stopped and enjoyed the prepared coffee and croissant. Almost everybody else were soaking wet.

The tournament was cancelled and deferred to February 2010. So not all was lost, i'm still in contention .... if I can get my handicap revised in time.

Hole No 18

Hole no - 18
Par - 4
Index - 11
Distance - 350 m

Summary:

It's finally time to finish off the game. Hole 18 is a straight forward par 4 with minimal obstacles. During dry season you can drive your ball passed the 150 m marker.

Photo 1: View from hole 18 tee box
Then it's a simple 5 iron to the brown. Par is very realistic but I've scored a birdie here before, a chip-in from the apron with Annick as my playing partner. If you end up with a bogey it's actually not bad. I've had worse score especially during raining season.

Hole No 17

Hole no - 17
Par - 4
Index - 6
Distance - 335 m
Summary:
Hole 17 is the second longest par 4 after hole 9. It's very difficult to get it on in 2 so just drive the ball as far as you can. Needless to say, don't go too far right left or right.

Once you are on the fairway, use a 3 wood if you wish to take a bit of risk. It can be rewarding but if you screw it up then you'll end up with a big score .... guaranteed.

Photo 2: Brown for hole 17

Once on the brown, a 2 put is easy. This can be a make or break hole because you only have 1 more hole left after this.
